Beginner piano lessons at any age.
Piano lessons are great to take at any age. Playing the piano is a wonderful talent to have and you will never be bored or lonely if you have a piano to play. But perhaps the most important thing you need if you are going to take piano lessons is access to a piano. Your lesson will only be able to cover so much and then it will be up to you to practice and master the required techniques between each lesson. Not only will it be difficult for you, but it will be incredibly frustrating for your teacher if no progress has been made in the intervening period since your last lesson.
You don’t necessarily have to own a piano, but you must at least have regular access to one. If you are unable to plan to have a piano where you live, perhaps you could consider getting an electric piano. For those who live in apartment buildings pianos are not practical. Not only is it difficult to logistically get a piano upstairs, but the neighbours in your building will no longer be your friends if you are practising at all hours. An electric piano is definitely more lightweight, and more significantly, you can usually plug in earphones and leave everyone else in peace. This is very advisable at beginner level when the repetition of mundane exercises will drive even the most patient people in your household absolutely mad.
People of all ages take up piano lessons. Younger children have the advantage of youth, and are very quick at picking up new skills and knowledge. They love the challenge of something new, and if musical, then a real-life musical instrument is bound to be a big hit. Starting to take piano lessons as an adult is quite different. Often as adults we are slower to catch on with new concepts, and training our fingers to do something new can take a bit of time and patience. The advantage adults have over children is that their hands are fully grown! Pianos are obviously built at one standard size, so children have to learn to overcome the difficulties posed by small hands. They also need to build up a fair amount of strength in their fingers to get a good sound from the keys. Adults also have the advantage in that area, as fingers are much stronger and probably more flexible.
Check out what piano teachers are in your area. Many are based in music schools but there are quite a few that work individually. Ask about the experience that teacher has with complete beginners and how they would approach their teaching. Are they focused on lessons that give purely enjoyment, or do they encourage their students to work towards piano exams. Whatever the answer, be sure that you and the teacher agree on the method going forward, and hopefully this will be the start of something great for you! So what are you waiting for? Warm those fingers up and start playing!
