If you are a parent of a young adult then driving lessons are an invaluable gift your child will thank you for. Start them off with good habits that will last a lifetime.

When your child suddenly becomes old enough to get a driving licence you know that you can no longer truly call them a “child”. People learn to drive at many different ages, but for those living in more rural areas where public transport is not so readily available, learning to drive is an important way to begin the road to independence.

Very often with families living in remote areas, land and space are not an issue, and therefore there is frequently an open area suitable to put a complete learner behind the wheel. This usually means that a parent will be the first person to teach basic driving skills. Now just because a lot of us drive on a daily basis, and often for many years, this does not automatically mean we are capable of imparting the knowledge to do so in a successful and positive way. I know there are many people out there with vivid memories of blazing arguments with parents when learning how to drive. In fact, learning these skills from anyone close to you will undoubtedly be quite difficult, hence it really is very advisable to find a qualified driving instructor.

Good habits are formed at an early stage in each new area or skill we tackle. Where driving in concerned, good habits are vital to ensure safety on the road. Having your first experience behind the wheel of a car is very nerve-racking. Going through this with a qualified driving instructor will make the experience a lot better. Knowing that the instructor does this on a full-time basis and is used to dealing with the huge array of simple mistakes you will make at the start is very reassuring. I clearly remember the first time I sat in the driver’s seat of a car, and the extremely calm voice of the instructor beside me. I suspect the scenario would not have been so calm if I put my poor father through the experience!

Just as a professional will help keep the situation from turning into a crisis, an impartial instructor is also best placed to provide constructive criticism on your progress. Hearing a parent or family member pointing out all the things you are probably doing wrong will not make for easy relations once you all return indoors. It is much easier to get feedback from someone you know is making constructive comments in order to improve your overall ability. An instructor is not there as your friend, but an expert who aims to impart good, solid skills of driving that will hopefully stay with you permanently.

So if your son or daughter is at an age where they are going to strive for greater mobility, then wisely invest in driving lessons. They can be expensive, hence many a young person won’t have the means to fund it. Help them out, and in turn you will help yourself. If they can drive then maybe you won’t have to provide that personal taxi service you have been keeping for many, many years. And not only will your son or daughter be grateful for the lessons and the freedom it creates, you too can benefit when you get them pick you up with all those bags after a hard day hitting the shops...
