Ceramics in Our Everyday Lives
For people who enjoy creating things, there are art classes where they can learn how to create your own dinner plates, vases, mosaics and other decorations.

Ceramics are everywhere around us – in our homes, our gardens, our cars and even at the office. Ceramics have been used as materials in arts and crafts for a very long time, and new uses for ceramics are being discovered continually. Almost every archaeological find includes a number of ceramics in the form of cutlery or jewelry, for example.

Some of the innovations made in the world of technology that are based on the use of ceramics are the piezo ceramic element in various types of stereos, headphones and other sound producing devices; ceramic breaks for your car and other machines; ceramic ball bearings that allow the machine to run at greater speeds because of the reduced friction, and many more.

There are many reasons why ceramics are so popular, and used on a daily basis by many people. It is one of the most durable materials available and is inexpensive and easy to source.

Ceramics, exposed to extreme weather conditions or very high or very low temperatures, withstand these conditions without a problem. Perhaps not many people know that samurai swords in Japan are first formed inside a ceramic mold. Once the metal inside has cooled, the sword is taken out and finished.

Still, the traditional use of this material is the most common one, and can be seen in many houses. Kitchenware, plates, vases, and various wall and floor decorations are all made of ceramic materials. Almost every bathroom features some form of ceramics – floor or wall tiles, sinks, bathtubs and more. Outside, in almost every garden, there are decorative ceramic figurines; in larger gardens it is even possible to see a ceramic fountain.

One of the main reasons why ceramics are still favored is the fact that this material is very durable; if taken proper care of, ceramic items can last you a lifetime and can be passed on to the next generation.

An interesting fact about dinner plates made of ceramic is that if you drop them on the floor by accident they may break, as, even though they are very durable, the plates are still fragile. In contrast, if you turn the plate upside down, you can actually sharpen your kitchen knives on the bottom side of the plate, using the rim that the plate stands on.

With so many elements in our homes being made of ceramic, it is no wonder that many people are keen to learn how to work in ceramics. There are many classes teaching how to work with ceramics.

For people interested in how to fix things at home and save money by doing it themselves, there are ”Do it yourself” classes that teach how to tile, fit bathtubs, along with many other useful skills, by learning special drilling, tile removal and ceramic cutting techniques.

For people who enjoy creating things, there are art classes which teach you how to do this, using only ceramics and few simple tools: paint, glue and brushes. There you can learn how to create your own dinner plates, vases, mosaics and other decorations.
