Language courses for children.
In some countries foreign languages are not taught on the school curriculum until a child reaches secondary school. We all know that young children absorb new information and concepts really quickly, and learning another language is far easier when you are younger. Something that also helps is the fact that younger children experience language classes that may be more conversational in nature, rather than the difficult lessons focusing on grammar and endless verbs that often torment teenagers. Developing a child’s interest in a language before they get to any difficult level in a school curriculum will make a big difference in their ability to progress.
There are many language classes aimed at children of different ages groups and previous experience. As this is not strictly like the school curriculum, there is frequently an overlap of ages within the one class. This makes it easy to place siblings in the one group and can create a great activity for them to experience and enjoy together. Classes often take place on Saturdays, and can be a great way for children to learn in a fun environment at the weekend.
At beginner level, and certainly with children that are quite young, it is important that above all else they have fun in the class. Most teachers are highly driven to fire up a child’s enthusiasm and instill a passion for the language concerned. Hopefully your child will get firm guidance in order to develop good pronunciation from the beginning. Getting the sound of the language on your ear is essential. You are not trying to just overload your child with more vocabulary, but are aiming to make the sound of another language as natural to them as possible.
Some people are lucky enough to grow up with parents who speak different languages. The household is very often bilingual and this makes the absorption of languages so easy. Instead of working out a translation from your native language, you can just think effectively through a whole other set of words. Obviously learning languages as soon as possible is the best scenario, but this is not always possible in the home or even through the regular school curriculum. Therefore finding an extra-curricular class that your children can attend is a great idea.
By learning a least one other language apart from their native tongue, a child should then find learning other languages much easier in later years. Sentence structures can be quite different in languages of neighboring countries, and so if you experience these potential differences early in life they will pose no issue for you at a later stage, if you are studying a similar language at an in-depth level.
So check out what language classes are available in your area. Find out what languages are available and decide which ones may be more beneficial to your child and your family circumstances. Maybe you spend family holidays in a particular place and the language of that country would be very useful to have. Or maybe you have relatives who speak another language and you would like to keep that spoken language alive in your family. Whatever the reason, find a class that suits your family and let the next generation experience the pleasure and wonder of another set of words!
