Sign your son or daughter up for a cookery course so they will eat well when they move out of home.
Kids these days are more familiar with the kitchen than previous generations. With both parents often working and very different family lives now existing compared to years ago, many kids have learned plenty of skills in the kitchen, from their parents and maybe also from trial and error! But helping out in the kitchen and even preparing basic meals for themselves when they are younger does not mean that they are equipped to cater fully for themselves when they leave home. We know nobody will really go hungry, due to the abundance of fast food outlets, and of course the ready-meals sitting on the shelf of every supermarket. But this is probably not the form of cuisine you really want your son or daughter consuming.
Having spent their entire childhood ensuring they receive enough nutrition and nourishment to keep them healthy and strong, it would be fairly soul-destroying to see them falling into a fast food rut. So before this happens, give them the skills to make better decisions about food. Enrolling your child on a cookery course will probably have far more long-reaching benefits than you personally trying to convey the message. Admittedly you may be perfectly capable of demonstrating excellent culinary skills, but the chances of you being viewed as an authority on the subject by your own teenager is possibly slim.
Look for a basic cookery course that will teach your offspring general skills and not overload them with too much technicalities. Avoid courses that will involve more adventurous cooking, as that will often involve more expensive ingredients and maybe specific kitchen equipment – both of which will be outside the budget of a student! Hence a course that is best is one that teaches basic cooking skills, and focuses on raw ingredients and how to enhance and work with them. Ingredients do not have to be expensive or particularly fancy in order to create inventive and nutritious meals. Teenagers are possibly still growing, so they need to be aware of what certain foods are going to give them, and how eating well will create a much better balance in their physical and mental well-being. Therefore learning about raw ingredients is essential.
A long-term or weekly course may not be suitable option, but many cookery schools offer more intense sessions, with day-long or weekend workshops. Spending a bit of time setting up a good approach to cooking will remain long past student days. Knowing how cooking techniques can vary the outcome of identical ingredients is invaluable when trying to be creative on a budget. Very frequently students sharing the same house will club together where food shopping is concerned. This means that better value can be got when buying a larger quantity of something, but is also results in perhaps one main meal for the household. Cooking to suit a group of housemates from varying backgrounds will be a challenge, but having someone with a bit of culinary knowledge will help the situation greatly! Keeping the grocery list simple and cost-effective can certainly be combined with getting tasty meals once you have a bit of knowledge.
Check out cookery courses for your son or daughter. You may just make them the most popular person in their house if they can keep everyone happy for mealtimes!
