Try a spinning class for a great overall workout!
The first spinning classes took place in Santa Monica, California, in 1989, and since then the craze has gone from strength to strength. Almost every gym now provides spinning classes and they are generally one of the most popular classes on the timetable. For those who don’t know what spinning is, it is a cycle-based class, but all participants are on stationary bicycles that have numerous features to enable the simulation of outdoor cycling conditions. This means you avoid any of the hazards associated with road cycling, particular in the dark winter months when weather and visibility can be bad.
All spinning bikes are highly adjustable so the same model can accommodate any rider. There is also a range of difficulty levels so the bike will suit riders of various abilities, ranging from a complete beginner who may have a very basic fitness level, to an experienced athlete requiring a physical challenge. The flexibility of the design of the bike means that people with a range of abilities can all participate in the same class. This is obviously ideal when you wish to attend a class with friends, but you know you all have different levels of fitness. Participants choose what level they wish to undertake during each stage of the class, so with the flick of a switch or turn of a knob you get to control how tough the workout will be. Even though you have the ability to lighten your load, your instructor will probably be watching your every move and pushing you to challenge your body more! So don’t think you’ll be in for a free ride!
The motivation of the instructor and the pumping music that generally drives spinning classes will be sure to keep you driven throughout the session. Following your initial warm-up, the set will vary, taking you through a variety of sprints, hill climbs and interval training, using various positions on the bike that will work through various muscles. Your legs are going to get a great workout here, but your back and hips are also used greatly, so in general this class focuses on the muscles of the lower half of the body. It also provides a terrific cardio-workout benefiting your overall fitness.
As you build up your ability when you regularly attend spinning classes, you will feel the improvement in your strength and general fitness. Driving your body through an intense spinning class is no mean feat, but you will quickly feel the positive impact it can have.
Check out spinning classes in your area. See if you need to be a member of a gym to participate, or find out if you can opt for a pay-as-you-go version. This will give you the flexibility to fit it in around your normal weekly schedule. But be sure to attend regularly. There is nothing worse than letting it slide for a week or two and then having to get back on that saddle again! So what are you waiting for? Get a few friends together and get spinning!
